Larges Interchanges & Highway Corridors
I-490 to I-90 Interchange (EOWA)
Des Plaines, IL
Vinod was Project Structural Engineer for Phase II design for improvements to the I-90/I-490 (EOWA) System Interchange, including the preparation of contract plans and specifications.
The project includes design of two 1200’ long Western Access tollway bridges over an MWRD detention basin and Higgins Creek. These complex bridges have multiple ramps converging and diverging on them; superelevation transitions on the bridge deck; and unique substructures due to the large grade differential. They are highly curved with varying widths. The complexities of construction, including access and erection, were addressed in the design. The project also includes the design of two 270’ long Western Access Ramps over the I-90 tollway as well.

I-294 Master Planning
Cook & DuPage Counties, IL
Vinod was Lead Structural Engineer for master planning and advance engineering studies for a 12-mile section of the Central Tri-State Tollway (I-294) from 95th St to Cermak Rd for the eventual reconstruction and capacity improvement. This section contains seven 7 interchanges, 35 bridges, 6 drainage culverts, over 60,000 feet of retaining/noise walls, 4 toll plazas and 1 oasis.
Vinod led a structural team responsible for inspections and condition assessments of these structures, developing and evaluating structure alternatives in conjunction with the overall corridor improvement alternatives, making recommendations for optimum structure options, and preparing Bridge Condition Reports. The team also prepared Type, Size & Location (TS&L) plans for the recommended structure options.

I-80/94 from I-294 to US-41
Cook County, IL
Gary was the Program manager for $465 million reconstruction of 9-mile stretch of I-80/94 from I-294 to US-41. He coordinated the work of 4 separate design consultants and 24 total separate construction contracts. Gary was responsible for establishing consistent details, contract schedule and construction staging contracts. He was also the Structural PM responsible for replacement of 4 mainline bridges and design of 10 new retaining walls.

This project included the design and construction of the SPUI Interchange at Torrence Ave and Kingery Expressway. Vinod was the Project Structural Engineer for this SPUI and met Gary through coordinating overall corridor requirements with each other.

This large corridor was delivered successfully and remains the busiest crossing between Illinois and Indiana today.

I-88 from IL-59 to I-355
DuPage County, IL
Gary was the Structural project manager for widening and reconstruction of an 8-mile stretch of I-88 from IL-59 to I-355. The scope included the reconstruction of 4 different interchanges at IL-59, Winfield Rd, Naperville Rd, and IL-53. The new widened mainline bridges were 170’ wide, carrying 4 lanes and 2 full shoulders in each direction. The project also included new retaining walls required for reconfiguration of I-88 and Naperville Rd interchange.
I-90 at Arlington Rd. Interchange
Arlington Heights, IL
Gary was the Project SE for the reconstruction of this interchange including complete replacement of I-90 bridge over Arlington Heights Rd. The new bridge is 190’ long, 220’ wide, 2-span with PPC beams, supporting 12 lanes of I-90 traffic. The design included the addition of new ramps to provide I-90 EB exit and WB entrance. The scope also included design of 4 new CIP concrete retaining walls, totaling 3,515 feet in length, from 9 to 22 feet height.
